Business Careers and You brings employers to Cap

The current state of the economy and job market is a popular, somewhat grim topic among soon-to-be graduates.
Students at Capital have the benefit of the Career Services Department and the staff's continuing efforts to help with the transition to the so-called "real world."
On Tuesday November 18, Career Services held the third annual Business Careers and You-an event designed to give future graduates the opportunity to hear from employers about what to expect after graduation when entering the job market.
The event was organized by Jon Hefflebower and Jessica George of Career Services.
They spent the past few months planning the event by determining the participating employers, presenters' information topics, the time and place of the event, as well as how they would advertise.
During that time they built off of each other's ideas to ensure the quality of the program for the students who attended.
Among seven participating employers, six were Capital alumni.
The representatives of the employers gave presentations about their experiences with school, internships, job searches, and advice for current students.
Some of the alumni were recent graduates, and reassured students that Capital provides an education that pleases employers.
The current job market was not the main focus of the event, but some employees did mention the issue, according to George.
"Some employers did recognize that it may be difficult for recent grads to find employment," George said. "They emphasized the importance of networking and internships to make you stand out when applying for jobs."
Following the presentations, the students attending had a chance to network with any of the employers that interested them.
Students were able to take advantage of this event by getting business cards and email addresses to stay in contact with the employers.
Hefflebower and George were grateful for everyone who could attend and said it appeared to be beneficial for students who attended.
"We got some great feedback and it seemed as though students who came gained great information from the employers," George said. "We also would like to encourage students who are interested in a business career to come to Business Careers and You next year."
